Located in the vibrant Delmar Loop neighborhood of University City, Salt + Smoke is a standout barbecue restaurant that promises an authentic and deeply satisfying smokehouse experience. Renowned for its careful craftsmanship and bold flavors, this Missouri gem serves up some of the finest Post Oak-smoked meats alongside a variety of delectable Southern-inspired sides and an inviting atmosphere ideal for BBQ lovers and casual diners alike.
Salt + Smoke’s menu is a celebration of all things barbecue, with highlights that beckon the senses and ignite cravings. The Brisket Plate is a must-try — smoked to perfection over Post Oak and available in fatty, lean, or burnt end cuts, it’s tender, richly flavored, and melts in your mouth. Pair it with classic sides like creamy mac and cheese or tangy potato salad to round out your meal. Fans of pulled meats will rave over the Pulled Pork Plate, featuring pork shoulder smoked low and slow for 16 hours, and the cherry-smoked pulled chicken, both served with a fluffy cheddar bacon popover that adds comfort and mastery to every bite.
The menu also caters to the health-conscious with the delightful Kale Crunch Salad, a fresh and hearty mix of kale, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and carrots, elevated by spiced walnuts, creamy goat cheese crumbles, and a honey roasted garlic vinaigrette that brings it all together beautifully. For those seeking lighter or vibrant flavors, this salad stands as a refreshing contrast to the rich, smoky meats.
Salt + Smoke is just as innovative with its appetizers and sides. The Loaded Beef Fat Fries are a standout, crispy fries cooked in beef fat and topped generously with bacon, cheese sauce, and Alabama ranch—a perfectly indulgent dish that customers often describe as “amazing” and impossible to resist. The Fried Pickles offer a crisp, tangy bite that pairs wonderfully with Salt + Smoke’s house cocktails. Meanwhile, the hush puppies, though noted as dense by some patrons, come alive when dipped in the luscious maple butter, creating a surprising yet satisfying harmony of flavors.
The atmosphere at Salt + Smoke matches its bold menu—with a lively, casual vibe that welcomes groups of friends and families alike. Though seating can feel cozy, the staff is praised for attentiveness and flexibility, often accommodating larger parties with ease. Outdoor seating is available, which adds a relaxed option to savor the tantalizing aromas of barbecue smoke mingling with the energetic street buzz of Delmar Blvd.
Customer experiences capture the essence of Salt + Smoke’s appeal: the intoxicating smoky aromas upon arrival, the friendly and quick service, and the standout flavor of meats and sides. Whether it’s the ribs with a flavorful crust, the garlic-kissed fries, or the tangy, smoky sauces that elevate every bite, patrons keep coming back for that deeply satisfying taste of traditional yet inventive barbecue.
Salt + Smoke isn't just a meal; it’s a sensory journey into the heart of American barbecue culture, crafted with passion and presented with southern hospitality. For anyone craving robust, smoky, and perfectly seasoned fare in an inviting setting, this University City barbecue haven delivers on every level.
We stopped here for a lunch of appetizers. We ordered Fried House Pickles, Burnt Ends Toasted Ravs, Hush Puppies, Cherry Smoked Wings and Loaded Beef Fat Fries. The Hush Puppies were very dense and bland. They are served with Maple Butter which was so delicious and helped give them flavor. The Loaded Beef Fat Fries are AMAZING! OMG . They are served with bacon, cheese sauce and Alabama ranch. They are so rich and garlicky. They are just so frickin good. The Cherry Smoked Wings were very flavorful and were nicely smoked. The Burnt End Toasted Ravs were nice and crispy. You wouldn’t know by eating them that the filling was supposed to be burnt ends. Overall they really lacked flavor. The Fried House Pickes are made with three kinds of pickles; B&B, Dill Spears and Gherkins. They were unique and they all were very sweet tasting, almost like they were bread and butter pickles. For drinks we had a Walnut Old Fashioned and a Pineapple Margarita. Both were so good. Like soooo good. We would love to come back and try some main courses next time. We had a good experience. We came with a party of five. I left off one star for the limited seating options as most tables were four top. But they accommodated us and moved two tables together. The food was great and service was timely. Pricing was great for portion sizes. I had Kale Crunch Salad with Salmon added. There was outdoor seating available as well.
Yum! We got the ribs and pulled chicken with sides of baked beans, mac and cheese, greens, and fries. Our server was also very sweet and attending! The ribs were really good, the meat was tender with a large crust The pulled chicken was good but my family devoured it before I got a good chance to taste it lol The fries were really good, it's fried in beef fat and has a really yummy garlicky taste. The mac and cheese!!! Very creamy and good. I don't see creamy mac n cheeses that often because of grainy rouxes. The salad was good, the croutons were the best. Overall very good.
When you are in the Delmar Loop area, you immediately smell the BBQ in the air from Salt + Smoke. This is their original location and they now have multiple locations thru out the St. Louis area. This location is always busy but we were lucky enough to get seated immediately on a Sunday night. They have a gluten free menu which is always a plus but we were in the mood for just a few appetizers. We started with the Deviled eggs with Bacon which were fantastic and an order of Cherry Smoked wings with Sweet Trashed sauce. The wings were meaty and juicy and the BBQ sauce was so good we ended up buying a bottle to take home. Their menu is extensive offering salads, sandwiches, plates of BBQ and dessert. They have a nice selection of crafted beers and bourbons as well. If you want good St. Louis BBQ,this is definitely a place worth visiting.
Had a pretty great experience here, stopped by for some lunch. The food came out super fast! By the time I had finished washing my hands after ordering it was already out. Honestly out of everything the fries were the star of the show!! I think they are beef fat fries with some herb seasoning, but it was phenomenal. The food was pretty filling and also affordable. Ended the meal with some gooey butter cake. Because of a mix up in the kitchen it took a while. Overall a great experience. Even on a weekend afternoon the place was pretty empty.
We had amazing food here and had the best service. My partner would have liked his wings cooked slightly longer but we are still talking about how good the rest of our food was.
I picked up my order. I was disappointed not to see mashed potatoes on the menu. The ribs were Bang'n. The chicken wings could have been a bit less fatty! The fries were peace and tasty! The green beans were good as well. The quality & quantity matched up decently. I very well may visit again before I leave St. Louis.
